A few words about studies that showed that Chinese acupuncture helps spinal cord injuries and lower back pain. Chronic pain.
(1) Chinese acupuncture and spinal cord injury;
A clinical study recently conducted on the subject of Chinese acupuncture treatment for spinal cord injury showed promising results.
100 patients with acute spinal cord injury were randomly divided into two groups.
The control group was treated with standard rehabilitation treatment, while the treatment group received Chinese acupuncture treatment with electrical stimulation, electro-acupuncture, in addition to rehabilitation.
In both groups, neurological and functional scores were measured at enrollment, at hospital discharge, and one year after the injury.
There was a significant improvement in both scores in the treatment group that received Chinese acupuncture, compared to the control group.
Chinese acupuncture treatment began as soon as possible after the injury.
The points chosen were bilateral – Huxi SI-3 and Shenmai BL-62, and four typical acupuncture points related to the lower back, spinal column and overall Qi flow.
And now, regarding chronic pain:
(2) Chinese acupuncture and spinal pain
Chinese acupuncture is effective in treating chronic pain following spinal cord injury (SCI), according to a study conducted in the department of orthopedics at the New Jersey Medical School.
Twenty-two patients with chronic spinal pain who suffered from moderate to severe pain for at least six months received a course of 15 Chinese acupuncture treatments over a period of seven and a half weeks, alongside a parallel control group with no treatment.
Patients were asked about their pain intensity: ten patients (46%) showed improvement in pain intensity and painkiller use after treatment, while six patients (27%) reported an increase in pain that still remained three months after treatment; the researchers concluded that acupuncture may provide pain relief.
